Frequently asked questions

A qualification like the Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Project Management is a short, focused postgraduate program that builds foundational project management skills for healthcare settings. The UNSW Online Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Project Management covers core project management principles plus healthcare governance and delivery, completed in as little as eight months.

It's the entry point into UNSW Online's Project Management suite. You can specialise in healthcare from the graduate diploma level, with this qualification sitting below the graduate diploma and master's in depth and duration.

The qualification combines two core project management courses with two core courses specific to healthcare governance and project delivery.

At a glance:

  • Four courses in total
  • Completed in as little as eight months, part time
  • 100% online
  • Entry point into the wider Project Management (Healthcare) suite

For example, a project manager new to healthcare might complete this qualification to quickly build the governance knowledge needed to work confidently within a hospital or health service.

As a project management program for healthcare professionals, this graduate certificate is designed for two groups: project managers moving into healthcare, and health professionals moving into project delivery for the first time.

If you're an experienced project manager, it builds the healthcare-specific governance and delivery knowledge you don't get from generalist training.

If you're a nurse, allied health professional or other health worker, it builds structured project management skills on top of your existing clinical or service knowledge.

Designed for:

  • Project managers moving into healthcare
  • Nurses and allied health professionals moving into project delivery
  • Anyone wanting a fast, focused entry point into the Master of Project Management (Healthcare)

For example, a physiotherapist who has informally led service improvements on their ward could use this qualification to move into a formal Project Officer role.

Yes, this qualification suits project management for clinicians and other professionals for whom project work is only part of their current role. It builds formal project management skills you can apply directly, without requiring you to leave your current position.

Many students study while working, applying what they learn to project responsibilities they already hold within their clinical or operational role.

The course content is designed to be practical, so you can bring real workplace projects into your coursework.

Suited to:

  • Professionals with partial project responsibilities
  • Part-time study, one course at a time
  • Practical, workplace-applicable content

For example, a nurse unit manager who oversees occasional service improvement projects alongside their clinical duties could use this qualification to formalise and strengthen those skills.

No, healthcare project management without healthcare experience is entirely possible with this qualification. It's open to professionals with or without a clinical or healthcare background and builds the healthcare-specific knowledge you need from the ground up.

If you're an experienced project manager from another industry, you'll learn the governance, compliance and delivery skills specific to healthcare settings.

The qualification doesn't assume prior healthcare knowledge, so you won't be at a disadvantage starting from outside the sector.

What you don't need:

  • A clinical background
  • Prior healthcare industry experience

What you gain:

  • Healthcare governance and delivery knowledge, taught from the ground up

For example, a project manager from the construction or IT sector can apply their existing delivery skills while building healthcare-specific governance knowledge through this qualification.

The subjects (known as courses) included in the Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Project Management are two core project management courses and two healthcare specialisation courses, covering project fundamentals, healthcare governance and healthcare project delivery.

The two core courses, Project Management Body of Knowledge and Project Administration, build foundational project management capability.

The two core healthcare specific courses, Healthcare Governance for Project Management and Healthcare Project Implementation, apply that foundation directly to healthcare settings.

Courses include:

  • Project Management Body of Knowledge
  • Project Administration
  • Healthcare Governance for Project Management
  • Healthcare Project Implementation

For example, you might apply what you learn in Healthcare Project Implementation to plan a small service change in your own workplace as part of your coursework.

The online healthcare project management certificate (Graduate Certificate of Healthcare Project Management) duration can take as little as 8 months, part time. You study one course at a time across four seven-week study blocks, known as hexamesters.

This flexible structure means you can keep working while you study, rather than pausing your career.

At a glance:

  • Four courses in total
  • As little as eight months, part time
  • Six study periods (hexamesters) offered each year
  • Intakes in January, March, May, July, August and October

Yes, a Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Project Management without a degree pathway is available. If you haven't completed a bachelor's degree or higher-level qualification, you may still be eligible with a minimum of six years' relevant or professional work experience in project management or a related field.

Relevant experience includes responsibility for non-routine or unstructured tasks, problem-solving, team leadership or resource management.

This pathway means the qualification is accessible to experienced professionals, not just those with formal prior study.

For example, a health services coordinator with eight years' experience managing service changes, but no formal degree, could be eligible to apply through the experience pathway.

Yes, a graduate certificate to master’s healthcare project management pathway is built into this qualification. Once you complete the graduate certificate and meet the required weighted average mark, you can progress into the graduate diploma, and from there into the master’s program.

This program forms part of a fully articulated postgraduate pathway, so completing the graduate certificate is a genuine first step, not a dead end.

Courses you complete count toward the higher qualification, so you're not starting again if you decide to continue.

For example, a health worker who completes the graduate certificate could continue directly into the master’s to build complete healthcare specialisation coverage.

This online Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Project Management qualification is delivered 100% online, through an asynchronous learning platform combined with live sessions, discussion boards and dedicated student support.

You can access course materials anytime, balancing self-guided study with scheduled live sessions and webinars.

You'll also have support from a dedicated Student Advisor from enrolment through to graduation, plus access to UNSW's Career Success resources.

How the program is delivered:

  • Asynchronous access to course materials
  • Optional live webinars and interactive sessions
  • Dedicated Student Advisor support
  • Access to UNSW's Career Success module

For example, you might get your course materials at the start of each study block to plan around your schedule, work through coursework whenever suits you, then tune in live or catch the recording later.

Healthcare is changing fast, with new models of care, digital transformation and ongoing reform reshaping the sector. But change only happens when someone can turn a good idea into a plan and see it through.

Healthcare project management combines core project management skills with the governance, compliance and safety knowledge specific to health settings. This qualification builds that combination, so you can support meaningful improvements to how care is delivered without needing a clinical background.

Demand for this expertise is growing. Job ads for healthcare project managers have grown 34.7% since 2020¹, and Australia's healthcare sector is forecast to add 541,900 new jobs by 2035², partly driven by an ageing population that will see almost 1 in 4 Australians aged 65+ by 2050³.

The healthcare specialisation is a stream within UNSW Online's Project Management suite, focused on the governance, compliance and delivery skills needed to manage projects in complex healthcare organisations. It's available at the graduate diploma and master's levels.

This graduate certificate gives you a foundation in core project management skills, with a study pathway into the graduate diploma or master's if you want to specialise in healthcare.

If you complete the Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Project Management, two of your four core courses are healthcare-specific. If you choose to go on to the graduate diploma or master's, those two courses count towards your healthcare specialisation, so you won't need to repeat them.

If your interests shift towards leadership instead, you can switch specialisations at the graduate diploma. You'll complete two leadership specialisation courses there, and the remaining two in your master's, in place of the elective choice you'd otherwise have.

If you've completed a related qualification, you may be eligible for credit for prior study. For the graduate diploma, up to four core courses can be credited, if this doesn't exceed 50% of the program. For the master, you may be eligible for up to four courses of credit if your prior study was completed within the last ten years and meets UNSW's recognition of prior learning (RPL) requirements.

If you've already completed the Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Project Management, your two healthcare-specific courses automatically count towards your specialisation.

Yes. The four courses in the Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Project Management have no prerequisites, so you can technically complete them in any order. In practice, which course you start with depends on availability, since not every course runs every hexamester.

There's no required sequence built into the program. This gives you flexibility if your preferred course isn't available in your first intake.

Course availability is set by the hexamester schedule, not by a fixed progression. What's taught changes intake to intake, so your actual course order will often be shaped by timing rather than choice alone.

If you have a strong preference for which course to start with, it's worth checking the intake schedule in advance or speaking with a Student Advisor to plan your sequence.

Healthcare projects operate in a uniquely complex environment, requiring specialised skills to navigate governance, safety, stakeholder needs and change in ways that differ from other large industries and organisations. This program arms students with the strategic judgement, critical thinking and deep project expertise to excel in these complex environments.
